The importance of the formation of the Soviet-Chinese Friendship Society for the Soviet-Chinese relations

Abstract. In the year of the 65th anniversary of the Russian/Soviet-Chinese Friendship Society the author considers it relevant to turn to the history of the Society and to analyze the factors that contributed to its formation. The study was conducted on the basis of the available documents of Soviet and Chinese origin and other scientific literature. The formation of the Society came at a time when signs of disagreements in the Soviet-Chinese relations, not yet visible, began to appear. It can be seen as a positive step towards the Chinese side and as an attempt to alleviate tension in official relations through the methods of public diplomacy. Some balance was found in the structure of the friendship organizations of the two countries and the level of their leaders, which had not been respected for a long time. Throughout the years, the Society has never stopped working. Life has shown that the traditions of good-neighbourliness and friendship established between the peoples of our two countries continue to feed the existing Russian-Chinese relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction facing the new era.
