Strategies of politeness in computer-mediated communications in public chats wechat.

Abstract. This study describes the theory of Brown and Levinson’s faces, and based on it, defines politeness strategies that are used in-group Chinese chat rooms. Having reviewed the Internet chat groups, we have identified the most used positive and negative politeness strategies. The language used in chat communications is different from face-to-face interaction, which uses both linguistic and paralinguistic signals. In chat communications, the interviewees should use a set of basic rules that indicate what should or should not be done in online communication to ensure common politeness. The goal is to explore politeness strategies in popular Chinese public chat groups Wechat, to shed light on the feature of politeness in the context of short chat messages compared to personal communication within the framework of the theory of Brown and Levinson’s faces. Our research focuses on the pragmatic aspects of interaction.
