Great Britain’s society in Wei Yuan's treatise «Illustrated Treatise of Maritime Kingdoms»

Abstract. The presented article is devoted to the study of the perception and characteristics of British society reflected in the historical and geographical treatise of the Qing scholar Wei Yuan (魏源1794-1856) «Illustrated Treatise of Maritime Kingdoms» (海國圖志, «Haigo tuzhi», 1847-1852). The author of the article translated and analyzed part of the source (fragments of scrolls 51, 52, 53); the article describes the key features of the life and traditions of the British society in the first part of XIX century, reflected in the source. Some details of Britain society of that time are compared with the Chinese realities of that time, including attitude to family and marriage, education system, features of teaching, etc.
