Genesis of the gender system in Vietnam

Abstract
The work is devoted to the study of the historical development of gender relations in Vietnam from ancient times to the present. The role of uxorilocality and virilocality in the development of family relations in Vietnamese society is considered. The main focus is on the Vietnamese gender system and the changes that have taken place in it throughout history. It is described in detail about the transformations in the social position of women within this gender system, since they seem to be more dynamic in comparison with the transformations in the social position of men. Considerable attention is paid to the difference in the development of gender relations in the upper and lower strata of society in the pre-revolutionary period and the difference in the development of gender relations in the city and village after the adoption of the renewal course. The strict norms of neoConfucianism and traditional Vietnamese customs are opposed. The higher social status of Vietnamese women relatively to Chinese women is emphasized. The main criteria for characterizing the gender relations of Vietnamese society at one time or another are the attitude of the Vietnamese to sexual activity, romantic and premarital relationships, the presence of certain freedoms in behavior for one sex or another, the presence of sanctions punishing certain forms of gender relations.
